Piazzolla in the Present: A Conversation with Maria Susana Azzi

Maria Susana Azzi, co-author of the definitive biographer of Astor Piazzolla, will discuss her work with Antoni Pizà and Federico Diaz. Diaz will also perform several of Piazzolla’s works on guitar, with flutist Andrea White.

Astor Piazzolla’s music entered the concert hall with the composer himself playing the bandoneon in his ensembles. Since then, his music has been played and recorded regularly all around the world. The great popularity of his music captivated, and is still captivating, the attention of researchers in Argentina and abroad. To celebrate the recent publication of her book Astor Piazzolla, eminent biographer Maria Susana Azzi will have a conversation with Antoni Pizá and with a young researcher in the field and DMA candidate at the Graduate Center, Federico Diaz. Diaz will also perform several of Piazzolla’s work on guitar, with flutist Andrea White.

Maria Susana Azzi is a cultural anthropologist from Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is a board member in the Fundación Astor Piazzolla. Moreover, she is the author of Astor Piazzolla (Editorial El Ateneo, March 2018), the most up-to-date and extended biography of the Argentine composer. The book was originally published with Simon Collier as co-author for Oxford University Press in 2000. To mark the 25th anniversary of Piazzolla’s death, the book has been reissued in an expanded edition, with more than a hundred pages of new material.

Antoni Pizà is the director of the Foundation for Iberian Music, at the Graduate Center’s Barry S. Brook Center.

Born in Mendoza, Argentina, Federico Díaz is a versatile up and coming musician of a new generation of guitarists with a multi-faceted career as a performing artist, arranger and composer in the Classical and Argentinian music worlds. His performances have taken him to distinguished festivals and concert halls across the United States, Europe and Latin America.
